So whilst looking at some other LSAs in the course of working on my project, I noticed that a couple seem to have "magic airfoils".

Jabiru J230

MTOW: 1320lbs
Clean Stall speed: 45kts
Dynamic Pressure: 6.87 psf
Wing area: 102 sq ft

Which gives a required Clmax (clean remember) of...1.88

From what I can dig out, this airplane has a NACA 4412 foil, which according to airfoiltools.com has a Clmax of 1.67 without including 3D effects.

So how did they get the extra lift?!

Next example

Flight Design CTLS

MTOW: 1320lbs
Clean Stall speed: 45kts
Dynamic Pressure: 6.87 psf
Wing area: 107 sq ft

Which gives a required Clmax (clean remember) of...1.79

This has a "C180 European airfoil which is 13.8% thick". I do not know what the details of this airfoil are, but I'd like to if anyone has it. The GA(W)-2 is the only thing I know of close to this Clmax, but it comes with a heck of a Cm.

Perhaps some of you can help solve this mystery of the magic airfoils...

Thanks
