There are a few threads on landing gear. Do a search. None cover the needs of roadable airplanes. None cover roadable airplanes that need to land on roads with traffic.

This thread is for roadable airplane landing gear and the special needs of LANDING ON ROADS.

First off, a classical tail wheel and a tri gear will not work when landing on a road because the wheel control is insufficient for road use both in takeoff or landing, let alone roading around town. In addition, rotate must be disabled upon landing so as to maintain constant road contact force.

There were discussion on front wheel steering with a rear wheel fixed. Most thought a classical tail wheel with the front mains fixed and rear wheel steering was better than a front main steering with a rear fixed. I agree, but that is not the only way to make the front steering.

Let's start out with what is required to make a roadable landing gear work, and then go into what a roadable gear that lands on roads must have. The first being able to convert at some point after a rotate landing/takeoff. The second being instantly function for road quality driving upon landing. A Terrafugia, for example is a cross between the two as it cannot rotate and it needs a steering wheel positioned to function for road. Third let's talk about how an ATOL gear would be different or the same to the first two options.
