The technology of autonomous flight control has already arrived. When (and if) we are ever ready for it, even the most sophisticated GA aircraft of the future will still be lagging behind its potential when control technology of this sort is allowed to be utilized. Make no mistake: when people decide to aviate, it will be possible for them to do so en masse.

I've been keeping a sleepy eye on the pace of development of this 'systems side' of the equation: blink and you'll miss it. Several teams are working on stuff like this (which is actually more difficult to achieve at small scale, from a technical standpoint, than in larger forms.) The author's page linked below shows some pretty amazing circus tricks.
