According to Leading Edge Air Foils which does a lot of Rotax engine sales and services, their overhauls consists of replacing the crankshaft on all of their 2-cycle engines every 300 hours or five years, whichever comes first. The cost for the overhaul which includes the crankshaft is $2,000 for the 447. This doesn’t include labor.

Does anybody know why the crankshafts need replacing so soon? And why would it need replacing at the five year mark if you had much less than 300 hours?
