Paramotors have become more sophisiticated over the years as have their engines. I have been considering one in particular, the Black Devl M25Y, for use in a Sky Pup or perhaps a new original Part 103 ultralight design.

U.S. distributor Alex Varv assured me that the engine works just fine in a tractor configuration. The exhaust would have be modified slightly, but that shouldn't be too hard.. You can choose the prop reduction ratio to suit the prop size you want to use and since the basic engine with exhaust is just 32 lbs so you can even have electric start with a little scooter battery and still come out much lighter than the smallest Hirth or the old Rotax 277. It's only 25 hp @ 7500 RPM, so you would need to keep things light, but it should work if your performance goals are modest.

Does anyone have any experience with this or a similar paramotor engine in a fixed-wing ultralight, whether in pusher or especially tractor configuration?

Cheers,

Matthew
